Studying and /or writing poetry can be a wonderful exercise for English language learners. Using poetry is a great tool to enhance language development and it can be used in a variety of ways. For example, learners can practice listening comprehension by filling in the missing words of a poem that is read to them. A poem can also introduce and/or reinforce target vocabulary around a theme. Of course, there are many ways in which a trainer can use poetry with learners.
In term of writing poetry, it allows learners to experiment with language and vocabulary, and to freely share their ideas without the constraints of perfect grammar or established structures. Furthermore, it is a way for the learner to tap into his/her imagination, which can serve him or her well in many aspects of life.
