Reading about current events is a fantastic and interesting way to facilitate ESL learning. I regularly advise learners to read newspapers online to learn about cultural and political situations and I often use articles in training sessions. Beyond being a good way to make lessons more dynamic, reading about current events is also a wonderful way to boost vocabulary. Because of their linguistic complexity, newspapers offer a unique opportunity for vocabulary building. Furthermore, reading articles can also be particularly beneficial in improving learners’ ability to read for overall gist. In other words, they can read an article initially for its general idea. Then other activities that require a second reading can follow, allowing for sorting out the meaning of unknown words, etc.
